This project was a carbon footprint analysis and management tool for Wah Kwong, a shipping company. Carbonbase is a carbon-offsetting provider building sustainability solutions.

From the findings it was clear that the product would span several modules. I then put together epics, user stories with the team. The epics focused on for the initial product were emission data analysis, stakeholder reporting, and sustainability target setting.

Since time was limited, I defined a simple style guide to ensure consistency across wireframes. The idea behind the verdant green brand colour was to evoke fresh, new technology aligned with strong sustainability expertise.

The emission calculator was condensed into 3 spheres, offering a total of 3 input methods. response questionnaire format adds emission generating assets to the user's account. Making this initial setup simple was key to reducing friction in adoption of new technology.

Emission data visualisation needed to be available at varying levels of time period granularity. These updates help set sustainability targets, shape strategy and provide concrete numbers for reports.  This task was previously being carried out with regional averages manually, which was time consuming, inaccurate and error-prone.

Every asset (here: ship) has a few specific data points about the emissions they generate. It was useful for the organisation to take a closer glance at the highest emitters.

The difference we made

Prior to this, the target clients had been using regional averages for supplies, waste and manually inputting employee travel data. This tool especially sees potential in the shipping and building industry, where emission reporting is a significant part of regulations.

  • Employee-hours spent on updating and managing multiple spreadsheets were saved and employee frustration was drastically reduced.
  • Fleshing out distinct user funnels that led to the primary action for each stage of the production process ensured smoother task completion.

Final thoughts

This was Carbonbase's B2B SAAS tool to help enterprises with their low-carbon targets. By making tracking operational emissions simple, this tool has great potential for impact. Due to unavoidable time constraints prior to the MVP launch, this product is currently being iterated upon.
